E-Book Publishers

Why aren’t there more e-books?

Many publishers will not sell or license eBooks to libraries, including:

  • Macmillan Publishing
  • Simon & Schuster
  • Penguin Group
  • Brilliance Audio
  • Hachette Book Group

Recently, Random House publishing, one of the largest publishers of best-selling fiction, raised their prices for e-books for libraries 300%, making the cost of a book about $65.00- $85.00 compared to $15.00 for the hardback. We can not, in good stewardship of tax monies, pay that cost for a single fiction volume.

Why should publishers sell to libraries? Libraries make up about 1/3 of the book selling market –  a sizable share. By introducing readers to new authors, libraries help publishing companies grow new authors. Through readers advisory services in the library and online, library staff suggest authors and titles that you might enjoy, creating interest in newly published and backlist titles.

For over a hundred of years, libraries and publishers have worked together to provide information and promote literacy to build stronger communities. It is critical to the educational future of our society that this partnership continue.

Some of the ebooks you can’t check out at your eLibrary:

    • Steve Jobs by Waltar Isaacson
    • V is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton
