    Celebrate! Winfield is an annual event commemorating the history of the Winfield, Kansas community. You are invited to enter the competition by researching a topic relevant to Winfield history. All entries will be read and judged according to originality, relevance of topic and style. Cash prizes will be awarded and the top five papers will be presented at the symposium on January 31st. at Baden Square. A commemorative book of this years papers will be available. Lunch will be served. Those who choose to do so may make a free will offering.

    What should you write about? Some topics that have already been chosen include The Omnibus College, Marsh's Shoe Store, The Populist Movement in Cowley County, the Cowley County Fair, Elijah, The Lincoln Statue, the Salvation Army, early hotels, and the battle of prohibition activists in Winfield. Last years topics included The Chautauqua Movement in Winfield, nursing and nursing education, The Twigg Massacre and J.P. Baden and his influence on the development of Winfield. Some suggested topics would include, the history and impact of the oil boom, natural disasters and their impact on the local area, the development of ethnic communities, the effect and impact of the populist movement, the Ku Klux Klan, and the history of music in the area and its impact on the community.

    Why have a symposium? Winfield is a community that is proud of its heritage and this is an opportunity to promote discussion and research on the development of our community. Through the understanding of our beginnings we can better plan our future.

        Celebrate! Winfield is funded by former residents Bob and Mary Hartley and the Cowley County Historical Society, as well as independent donors. It will be held on January 31, 2004 in the Community Center at Baden Square. A brief thesis or outline must be submitted by June 30, 2003, with final papers due by Oct. 31, 2003.  Entries should be double spaced and include a brief bibliography. Footnotes or endnotes are optional.
