Memoir Writer’s Workshop
The Winfield Public Library and Cowley County Historical Society will be sponsoring a Memoir Writer’s Workshop on Saturday, September 25, 9:00am to noon to be held at the Winfield Public Library. Charley Kempthorne, author of For All Time: A Complete Guide to Writing Your Family History, will guide attendees thru narrative writing techniques and journaling to begin writing their memoirs and personal/family history. With this year’s “Make a SPLASH”@ your library” theme, our summer is all about water! Throughout June and July, in addition to the summer rea
ding club, we are offering weekly programs for children of all ages. These programs provide children opportunities to explore the ocean, learn to talk like pirates, perform water experiments, listen to fun tales about fishing, learn more about outdoor safety (Hooks, Ticks and Ivy), and create something each week to take home and enjoy. Fun for all ages! “Polliwogs & Wiggle Worms” programs for babies, toddlers and preschoolers include puppet shows, crafts, movement songs, and interactive stories. “First Mates” adventure programs for children ages 6 - 11 include special guest presenters like Exploration Place, Singer/Songwriter Thad Beach, Farm Bureau of Cowley County, Wildlife and Parks and a variety of activities and crafts. “Beach Bums” programs for tweens and teens include a variety of hands-on projects and games. We conclude each week with movies on Fridays for all ages to enjoy, and we’ll wrap-up the summer with an outdoor summer splash party with the Winfield Fire Department as our special guests! Film Movement Series
The Winfield Public Library will be featuring monthly movies that are award-winning independent and foreign films. The film featured Sunday, May 23, 2:00pm is Mother of Mine by Klaus Haro. During World War II, more than 70,000 Finnish children were evacuated to neutral Sweden to avoid conflict. Mother of Mine tackles that painful patch of history. Eero, a 9-year-old child , feels increasingly abandoned by his biological Finnish mother and is not attached to his Swedish surrogate mom. When Eero is returned to Finland, his confusion intensifies. This film is in Finnish and Swedish with English subtitles running 105 min.
Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale
The Winfield Public Library will be having their Annual Book Sale and Membership Drive at the Winfield Fairgrounds Bldg.8 on April 30th and May 1st. Friday night April 30th from 5:00 to 8:00pm, the book sale will be open to Friends of the Library members only. The public is invited to become a Friend of the Library. Memberships are available at the door for $5.00. One of the perks of being a Friend is having fun rummaging thru boxes of books before the sale is open to the public on Saturday, May 1st, from 9:00 to 4:00pm. Read more…

STORY TIMES AT THE LIBRARY

FALL SEASON: SEPT. 8 - NOV. 24, 2010 Story times are fun, interactive and playful. The sessions, led by Youth Services Librarian, “Miss Jo,” are designed to foster a love for books and life long relationships between children and the library. Please contact the library to register. Story times are held every Wednesday from September 8 - November 24, 2010. Three sessions are available to serve children of various ages.

Film Movement Series
The Winfield Public Library will be featuring monthly movies that are award-winning independent and foreign films. The film featured Sunday, February 28, 2:00pm is Arranged by Stefan Schaefer and Diane Crespo. It is the story of two young female teachers at a public school in Brooklyn; one is an Orthodox Jew and the other a Muslim of Syrian origin. They both are in the process of getting “arranged marriages”. Their friendship helps them through this difficult time, striving to be strong women in charge of their own happiness, while keeping their deep religious and cultural convictions. The film is in English and runs 89 mins.

It is the story of the bond between animals and humans, set against the backdrop of Hurriane Katrina.
